This region has a rich and diverse wealth of music, encompassing formal and non-formal traditions. Music meant to be performed in a ceremonial setting as well as to be sung in the open fields and rivers - all are present in the various genres of Bengali music; all are part of the Bengali identity. In recent years we have witnessed an assault on music from the standpoint of commercialism and the advent of instant music. Bengal Foundation has taken small but significant initiatives to counter such threats by creating an informed audience and ensuring a steady and accessible supply of good music.
The journey began with the publication of two LPs of Rabindra Sangeet by Iffat Ara Dewan in 1987. This initiated the tradition of bringing quality recordings of fine Bengali music to the public. Till date, Bengal the Foundation has published over a 100 albums honouring the rich and varied genres of Bengali music.
In addition to its regular release of cassettes and CDs, the Foundation undertakes other activities aimed at nurturing local musical traditions by providing support to cultural organisations and scholarships to talented musicians, holding workshops, festivals and musical soirees. Key among these initiatives are-
